There is a slight difference between these stages and those in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic & Knuckles in Blue Sphere, the ring counter counts down instead of up. These rings can be revealed by surrounding blocks of blue spheres completely by an outline of red spheres-the entire block will then be turned into rings. Some rings will be already visible in the stage, others will be hidden. In addition, the stages will contain a set number of rings to collect. Collecting all blue spheres will award the player with a Chaos Emerald and (if the full game has been accessed) progress to the next level. Silver bumpers with red stars bounce the player, causing them to run backwards for a short time (until the player pushes forward on the D-pad), and orange spheres catapult the player a certain number of squares forward. The player must run around the surface of a 32x32 wrapping square (torus), collecting blue spheres while avoiding red spheres. The player cannot play as Tails outside of the Sonic Origins release, neither can the player play as Sonic and Tails together on any version.īlue Sphere levels are based on the Special Stages from Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic & Knuckles. Pressing, , or will switch the playable character between Sonic (represented by blue-star bumpers either side of the word 'START') and Knuckles (represented by red-star bumper). The main menu of Blue Sphere will show the current level number along with a 12-digit code (password) that will allow the player to jump back to the current level. Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed Review It can also be accessed from the File menu's "Special Stage Mode" selection in Sonic & Knuckles Collection for PC, and it's own section in Sonic Origins. In Sonic Mega Collection and Sonic Mega Collection Plus, Blue Sphere can be unlocked separately (in the former case by playing Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic 3D Blast 20 times each) and is accessible by itself from the game list. In Sonic Jam, it can be accessed by "locking-on" Sonic 1 to Sonic & Knuckles. Locking on Sonic & Knuckles to another copy of Sonic & Knuckles will also load the game normally.īlue Sphere is also available in certain compilation games. Cartridges with large ROM file sizes (those that exceed 2 MB usually Genesis games released after Sonic & Knuckles) will not load Blue Sphere, but will instead boot Sonic & Knuckles as normal. Most other cartridges will allow the player to access only a single stage of the game, based on the cartridge's ROM header and the stage's code in the full Blue Sphere game. If the cartridge that is locked on to Sonic & Knuckles is the original Sonic the Hedgehog (as well as Sonic Classics due to the placement of Sonic 1 being at the 2 MB mark that the lock-on technology reads, which is only exhibited on real hardware, and any ROMs that share the same header as Sonic 1, such as early prototypes of Sonic the Hedgehog 2), then the full game of Blue Sphere is accessed with all stages. When any other Sega Mega Drive cartidge is inserted, background characters with a blue tint aren't shown to have animation on the title screen and the code of single Blue Sphere stage is shown. The scrolling text will be replaced by "Get Blue Spheres!". When the original Sonic the Hedgehog is locked on to the Sonic & Knuckles special cartridge, a screen appears with the Sonic & Knuckles logo, models of the characters Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Robotnik, and a line of scrolling text that says "No Way! No Way! No Way! No Way?" While this screen is visible, pressing, and at the same time changes the screen to the Blue Sphere menu. The title screen with single Blue Sphere stage code, from Sonic & Knuckles cartidge with Disney's Aladdin inserted on the top. In Mexico, during the nineteenth century, the term “ mestizo” appeared powerfully in the political discourse as a symbol of identity in the formation of the Mexican nation state and as a homogenizing center of national identity. These images circulated widely in Europe and its colonies, influencing debates on race and the formation of national identities. Artists and scientists first gave visionary expression to the discourse on racial hierarchy in eighteenth century Europe, setting up a powerful apparatus for manifestations of exclusion, racism, and xenophobia. These new practices also allowed classical notions to be re-conceptualized, such as race, genetic variation, and natural and human populations.Įrica Torrens, in her paper, discerns the genealogy and shift of the concept of race and the racialization of Mexican bodies to show the resulting novel visual culture from the merge of genetic knowledge with the phenomenon of racism during the second half of the twentieth century in Mexico. New techniques and practices were developed within human heredity as a medical field, intended not only to characterize but also to understand differences among populations and their relation to the presence of certain diseases. In the aftermath of Second World War, biology and medicine also witnessed intensive developments that gave rise to the field of biomedicine. Through the work of physicist María Aránzazu Vigón, daughter of General Vigón, a minister in the first cabinet of the Franco regime, Romero not only highlights how historicizing the instruments sheds light on circulation and transnational collaborations, but also show how gender issues affected the circulation of radiation counters, as Vigón was responsible for studying the construction and workings of radioactivity counters in Spain. They were used by nuclear policy authorities to demonstrate political power. Instruments and techniques travelled along with agreements and contracts, changing laboratories, establishing research agendas, and making nuclear development more dynamic. According to the author, these instruments were used as mediators, establishing not only protocols on how to act inside and outside laboratories, but also networks of collaborations (Spain exchanged uranium for technical assistance), and participating in the making of nuclear energy and political power during the Franco regime. Ana Romero’s paper is a reflection on instruments that circulated and travelled between Spain and Italy (radioactivity counters), and on the political power of these two nations in a world convulsed by the bipolarity that was established at the end of Second World War. In the early 1950s, in the wake of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings, extensive research and experimentation occurred in physics and chemistry. The Cold War affected not only science and technology related to the military and space races, but also research in biomedicine and other fields. The papers in this dossier share the same study framework, seeing the Cold War as a global and plural phenomenon that shaped international, national, and local conditions and decisions for scientific work in light of the rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union. A remarkable expansion of state-funded medical science and military patronage of scientific work in the life sciences occurred during the Cold War in industrialized and developing countries. Little attention has been paid to developments during the Cold War, when the life sciences, public health, and politics intertwined, and donors and new and renewed bilateral and multilateral organizations played an important role in the organization and output of scientific work. However, most studies on transnational science have focused on the eighteenth century and on naturalists. This rich approach problematizes the notion of “international science” and addresses pending issues, such as the precise definition of notions like circulation, reception, adaptation, and creativity. This transnational approach abandons the nation as a unit of analysis, Eurocentric narratives, cultural-diffusion interpretations, and the rigid opposition of the categories “center” and “periphery” in order to explain the dynamics of transnational circuits and the global and local circulation of knowledge, people, instruments, and scientific practices ( Brown et al., 2006). The recent perspective in the history of science has emphasized the need to write transnational narratives based on a reciprocal treatment of global and local contexts ( Subrahmanyam, 1997). Unlike the older type, the katana was not worn suspended, but thrust through the girdle, edge upward and hilt slightly to the right, making it necessary to turn it before drawing. These primitive swords had heavy ball pommels, and were intended to be used with both hands their scabbards were of wood, covered with a thin sheet of copper, sometimes gilt, and the guards were of the same metal.Ībout the close of the seventh century of our era the old straight swords of both the single- and the double-edged types gave place to the curved single-edged blade, known as the katana, which has become the typical Japanese sword. Instead of being thrust through the girdle, as in later times, they were worn suspended by rings and cords, somewhat after the fashion prevalent in the Occident. Contrary to the common belief, these earliest swords seem to have been single-edged the double-edged type, known as the tsurugi or ken, was probably of Chinese origin both varieties were straight. The earliest known Japanese swords are of bronze but steel had already been adopted before the beginning of history. It will be the endeavor of this article to give a brief description of this splendid blade, prefaced by a few notes upon the history of the sword in Japan and the part which it has played in the life of that country. Among the recent acquisitions of the Museum is a sword which there is good reason to believe was forged by the famous Masamune, commonly considered the greatest of Japanese swordsmiths. However, the symptoms of a migraine aura tend to be “positive” (such as flashing lights and skin tingling) and develop quite slowly, while those of a TIA are likely to be “negative” (losing the sensation in your hands or your vision in one eye, for example) and come on suddenly. Many sufferers worry that they are experiencing a transient ischaemic attack (TIA), also known as a mini-stroke. Confusingly for anyone who equates migraines with pain, sometime auras will appear without a headache these are known as “silent migraines”.Īuras can be visual – normally coming in the form of flashing lights, zigzag patterns or blind spots – but they can also include other symptoms such as ringing in your ears, pins and needles, imaginary smells or aphasia, where a person temporarily loses the ability to speak or to understand others speaking. One in three of those people will experience auras. Migraines affect about 10% of the population in the UK, according to the National Migraine Centre.
